Coffee reduces breast cancer risk!

Researchers from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden showed that coffee drinkers not only enjoy the taste of their coffee, but are also at a reduced risk of breast cancer.  It shows that drinking coffee specifically reduces the risk of the oestrogen receptor negative breast cancer.  “It is unlikely that the protective effect is due to phytoestrogens present in coffee as there is no reduction of oestrogen receptor positive cancer in this study” and the mechanism of this benefit is not clear.  In any case, it is good news for us coffee drinkers!

Female flight attendants have an increased risk of developing breast cancer.....

It is well established that female flight attendants have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk is approximately 30% higher than the risk of the general population which is currently 1/9 in New Zealand women. Whether it is cosmic ionizing radiation, disrupted circadian rhythms, jet engine emissions, or electromagnetic radiation that causes this is still being debated. Regardless of the etiology, we need to be sure that you are managing your own risk.

Sentinel node biopsy

What is a sentinel node biopsy? If breast cancer spreads from the breast, it goes to the lymph node or glands under the arm (axilla). They need to be examined in every breast cancer case to see if cancer has spread - this tells us whether the patient needs more treatment like chemotherapy or hormone blockade,  also the surgery clears the area of any cancer. This was always done by removing all of the glands from the area in everyone. Nowadays we use a technique to examine a small number of glands by the sentinel node technique. To do this, we inject a dye in at the nipple and it moves up the same lymph vessels that cancer would have used and gets into <4 nodes that drain the breast. At operation, these nodes are located and removed and assessed for cancer. This means that two thirds of women are not given a lymph node clearance unnecessarily.

Annual mammography starting at age 40

Annual mammography beginning at 40 reduces the chance of having a mastectomy. (Science Daily Dec 1, 2010) A recent study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America has shown that women between 40-50 years who were treated for breast cancer were more likely to have had breast conservation or a lumpectomy rather than a mastectomy if they had had a mammogram in the year before. So not only does annual mammography reduce the chance of breast cancer but it reduces the size of the treatment too.
