The average risk for a woman in New Zealand developing breast cancer by age 70 is 1:10, making risk reduction strategies and active screening important. The majority of women who develop breast cancer don’t have any risk factors, making it important not to discount the possibility in low risk patients who do present with breast changes. It is still useful to identify what risk factors can be modified, and to identify patients that need more intensive screening, risk reduction strategies and counselling.

Why from 40 years? 20% of breast cancers occur between 40-50 years. Why annual screening? Annual screening results in a smaller invasive tumour. The average annually screened cancer being 11 mm compared to 17 mm which is prognostically significant. Why digital mammography? Because it is better at detecting breast cancer. The DMIST Trial showed that digital mammography is 14- 27 % more sensitive at detecting breast cancers in women who were less than 50 years, or had dense breasts, or were premenopausal.
